Edo speaker drags APC to court over outcome of primaries


- Kabiru Adjoto, the speaker of the Edo state Assembly, accuses APC of stealing the mandate of contestants in the party’s primaries
- Adjoto says the alleged injustices done to contestants was carried out by some powers within the party
Kabiru Adjoto, the speaker of the Edo state Assembly and other lawmakers have filed a legal suit against the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the outcome of the party’s primaries.
The aggrieved lawmakers accused the party of stealing their mandates during the recently concluded polls, Channels TV reports.
The speaker, who represents Akoko Edo constituency (1) in the state assembly, filed the action at the Federal High Court Aduwawa, Benin City on Thursday, October 18.
He had contested in the APC primary for Akoko Edo federal constituency, but the incumbent lawmaker, Peter Akpatason, was declared the winner in the exercise.
Adjoto said the suit to was to correct the injustice allegedly done to them by some powers within the party.
He said the situation could tear the party apart unless President Muhammadu Buhari intervenes to stop the issue from spreading to other chapters of the party.
Meanwhile, political parties on Thursday, October 18, resorted to last minute rush to beat the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) deadline for the submission of list of candidates for 2019 general elections.
INEC had scheduled the submission of candidates’ names for the presidential and National Assembly between October 10, and October 18, and deadline for the governorship and State Assemblies election on November 2.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondents who were at the venue of the exercise, International Conference Center (ICC) Abuja, reported that many party leaders and representatives were just arriving at the venue at about 6pm
